The Favirut was designed during Jurriaan’s time in Australia. The first two prototypes were made at Babel Surfboards, where he worked. We surfed them around Victoria at different spots, types and sizes: from the famous overhead+ Bell’s beach point break to ankle high beachies, the board was fun.
Due to the 5 fin option, we experimented with different fin setups. The board worked well as a standard thruster or quad, but was also fun as a twin plus trailer and even as a twin it was very loose and (sorta) worked!
In designing the board we were looking for a bigger shortboard or hybrid that is fast, versatile and turns well. The intention was for this board to be a perfect first ‘shortboard’, if you’re coming down from a malibu or a soft top. However, it also needed to be fun to surf for experienced surfers, wanting to increase to their wave count or just have a fun session. The Favirut does this very well, and we have gotten great feedback from surfers with different experience levels.
The board’s bottom contours feature a single to double concave, into a vee behind the fins. This makes for a board that flies down the line, comfortable at both low and high speeds, and still can be turned well. The medium rocker and the pulled in tail enhance the turning ability. The rocker also makes the board extremely forgiving.
This in combination with generous planing surface makes the board paddle well, so it catches waves easily.
As with all our boards: a lot can be customized and you’re welcome to try our test model!
Waves:
0.75 – 3 m, everything. The board works from around waist high, but can handle some size and power. Good travel board.
