Sustainability

Sustainability has become a huge topic, and for good reason; we all need to save the planet together. Surfboard brands are very aware of this. However, the surfboard market is very traditional, and doesn’t change easily.  Only a handful of companies make really sustainable surfboards, by not using polluting foam blanks, toxic oil based resins and fibreglass. They use wood, for example.  This makes the boards very beautiful, but often also heavier, more complex to build and more expensive.

Our sustainability:

Let us start out by saying that we are not making 100% sustainable boards. For now, we feel that making a board completely from sustainable materials deviates too much from the board feel that we pursue. Instead we choose to minimize the impact on the environment by using top quality materials to make good quality boards that last.  Instead of using traditional polyurethane blanks (PU), which are very polluting during production, we choose to work with expanded polystyrene (EPS) blanks. We use epoxy resins. This is an expensive, but very strong and ding resistant resin. Our standard boards are also glassed somewhat heavier than the industry standard. Usually we use 6+6 oz glass on the deck and 6 oz on the bottom, where the standard is 4+4 oz, with a 4 oz bottom. Since the core is so light, and less resin is needed than with traditional polyester,  the boards still have a good weight and feel.  Since epoxy is a bit more flexible than polyester, the heavier glassing does not feel extremeley stiff.

Our boards have proven to be very durable. The boards that we made 6 years ago still look and surf great. Come and take a look at them yourself!

Our life cycle promise:

We believe in the durability of our surfboards and in a more circular economy. We offer everyone with a good, thanks board, the chance to sell them through our website, if they are done with them. This way other people can experience our surfcraft for a cheaper price or more easily try different shapes. Also we offer end of life disposal of any board. We can strip the board and dispose of it properly, while trying to reuse as much of the board as possible.

The future:

We aspire to keep updating our process to push sustainability and innovation in the future. We have big plans, that we’ll share with you when we worked out the details.

If you are interested in our process, or have suggestions how to reduce the footprint of our boards or process, please get in touch! We are always open to new ideas.
