Freddi Fish

The Freddi Fish is our original retro fish. The first Freddi is one of the first boards that Antoine and Jurriaan made together, under their old name ‘Brainfart surfboards…:’ (don’t ask, seemed applicable at the time)… This board was an instant hit and it is still around, in good condition and surfed regularly, feel free to give it a go!

Freddi is a traditional keel fin fish, based on the famous Lis fish, originally designed by the living legend Steve Lish, who, as a kneeboarder in 1967, wanted to have some more performance, like the pin tailed surfboards. He created the short split tail board to accommodate his fins and found out that he had created a very fast board that could turn harder than the pin tails of the time and was able to do so on smaller waves!

Anyways, enough about Steve, we’re here to talk about Freddi. Our fish is a quite true to nature retro fish, so it has a very wide tail, relatively straight outline and quite a flat rocker. This makes the board fast on small and weak waves. The two keel fins also make the board loose and skatey. What we changed compared to the original fish: we made the rails a little thinner to make it turn a bit more like a modern board, added a hard edge in the tail to give the board some more hold and drive down the line and we gave the board a tiny bit more rocker, so it would be more forgiving and nosedive less easily. Freddi is a lot of fun on the smallest weakest mushy waves you can imagine. He holds up unto around shoulder high, if not too steep.

Also: we do a more performance version of the Freddi: the Freddi 2.0. We change some aspects to make the board more suited as an allround board. The 2.0 is suited for a bit bigger waves. We pull in the tail a bit more, pull the rails down a bit and increase the nose rocker.

Freddi is recommended to be surfed by anyone post-beginner. Due to the fact that it can handle the smallest stuff with ease, it makes you paddle in to so many waves and surf them well. It is still one of Antoine’s go to boards, after all these years, just because it is so much fun, so much of the time.
